The Terra Canis Dog Sanctuary

A Safe Haven to Heal

For centuries, dogs have been steadfast companions to humans, known for their loyalty and affection. Scientists suggest that the most empathetic and compassionate wolves evolved into domesticated dogs, passing down their innate willingness for cooperation from their wolf ancestors. This ancient bond between humans and dogs is rooted in a profound and natural connection, often described as „Urvertrauen“ in German—a term signifying primal, deep trust.

At our sanctuary, many dogs arrive carrying the weight of inner and outer wounds. They have been mistreated, malnourished, neglected, hurt, harmed, abandoned, starved, kept on chains. They often have completely lost trust in humans.

Yet, when they come to us, they find a true safe haven—a place where compassionate people dedicate themselves to their care and healing. This primordial trust, though fragile, as we experience every day, can also be restored.

Ambassadors of Interspecies Trust

We see ourselves as ambassadors of interspecies trust, dedicated to teaching dogs that humans can be reliable, kind, and caring. Through care, compassion, and consistency, we guide them on their healing journey to trust humans again and rediscover love and companionship. Together, we rebuild the trust that has been broken. What amazes us most is the remarkable ability of dogs to heal and rediscover their capacity for love. Witnessing this transformation is profoundly heartwarming and deeply fulfilling.

By providing the dogs with a reliable daily routine, we help them find new confidence and gradually overcome their trauma. Consistent daily practices, gentle training, and an abundance of love and affection allow them to heal. With time, and lots of cuddles, they become healthier, happier, and ready to be adopted into new, loving homes.

Our History

In Portugal, dogs traditionally served as herders and protectors. However, with the decline of shepherding, many dogs are now confined to roles as gatekeepers, often chained with heavy restraints, exposed to the elements, and deprived of adequate food and water. Many farmers lack the resources to properly care for them, leaving these dogs to endure isolation, malnourishment, fear, and neglect.

In 2002, animal activists in the area began addressing this cruelty by providing chained dogs with essentials such as food, water, and basic shelter. However, it was soon understood that this approach inadvertently reinforced the system, as farmers became dependent on these efforts. This realization inspired the activists involved to pursue sustainable solutions, build meaningful relationships with the farmers, and develop strategies to create lasting improvements for the dogs.

In 2012, inspired by Canopolis near Barcelona and other pioneering sanctuaries, they constructed a safe haven where dogs can live freely and experience the joys of companionship. Nestled among trees and bushes, the sanctuary offers ample space for the dogs to explore, play, and rest. Daily care includes nutritious meals, medical attention when necessary, and, most importantly, socialization and pack walks.

The Terra Canis Team

During Tamera’s guest season, from April to November, guests join our mission as volunteers at the Terra Canis Dog Sanctuary to support. This year, for the first time in years, we’re excited to have a larger, more dynamic team from people living locally Blanca, Nadia, Johanna, Petra, Julia (the website creator), Leonie, and Bianca. This new group of strong and dedicated people strengthens the sanctuary’s spirit. We are very happy about this new development and we warmly welcome new volunteers living locally in our neighbourhood to join us. It’s a wonderful opportunity for those who have recently arrived in the area and are looking to connect with others or for dog lovers eager to enjoy walks, meaningful interactions, and a sense of community.
